We’ve just finished our second week of our colour topic and the children have been having lots of fun. Last week we all heard a story about colour and then painted our very own colour wheels. We also learnt about the three primary colours which are blue, yellow and red. We also all mixed our own secondary colours (green, orange and purple) which was tricky but we all did very well.
Our ‘Red Day’ went so well that we decided to have a ‘Green Day’ this week….don’t we all look fab in the different shades of green!
This week the children have been able to have a go at marble rolling paintings where the marble is dipped in paint and then rolled all over the paper to create a picture…. they all had the same colours to choose from but all the pictures look very very different!

It’s the start of our last half term in Reception and our new topic is ‘Colour’ . We will be doing lots of work on naming and mixing colours including talking about hot colours and cold colours.
We will also be learning about the colours that are important to different cultures and talking about how different colours make us feel.
Our opticians area will be changing into a ‘colour area’ later in the week where children can explore colour using different fabrics.
Read the poem below with a grown up and look out for the different colours when at home and out and about.
Remember Wednesday 9th June is ‘Red Day’ and children have been challenged to come to school in school uniform but with some kind of red accessory (such as red socks, a red hair bobble, red hat etc..).
Next Wednesday will be another colour so look out for the next update!
Our current topic is Keeping Healthy. Our role play area has changed into an opticians and the children have enjoyed trying on different frames, looking at different cases and testing their eye sight using the wall chart. Some of the children have shown that they are going to be very good sales people when they grow up as they have been ’selling’ glasses to the other children and adults in reception and being very persuasive!
As part of the topic the children have already been tasting different fruits and this coming week we will be setting up an obstacle course in the Reception playground and will be thinking about how our bodies change after exercise.
As some of you may already know since we have moved into the new building we have been lucky enough to have two role play areas; our home corner (which is in the moon room) and our topic role play area (which is in the stars room). Our topic role play area has proved very popular and as part of our wedding topic it started life as ‘Southwark Wedding Planners’ and then changed into the ‘Southwark Hairdressers’. The area will be changing again this week and will become an opticians. Photos coming soon!
For the last three weeks the topic has been weddings. This has been lots of fun and was an area that some of the children were a little confused about previously. The highlight of our topic was a ‘mock wedding’ on Wednesday 5th. We all got dressed up in our ‘best’ clothes and then went into the courtyard for the wedding. The bride and groom (Shelda and Alfie) had their names picked out of a hat and were very sensible during the service. We also had bridesmaids and ushers!
Here are some more pictures from our wedding day…look out for the picture of the wedding reception when we toasted the bride and groom!

Some of the children also decided to make wedding cakes out of playdough…don’t they look yummy!

Finally, we created a ’sea-side’ style picture so children could pose as the bride and groom.
Hello and thank you for visiting the Reception class blog. You can click on the pages on the left hand side of the page to look back at our posts for the Autumn and Spring Term.
We have now been in the new building for two whole weeks and we are all settled in and enjoying the new space. Our current topic is ‘Weddings’. As part of this we have looked at photos of different types of wedding celebrations and we have opened our ‘Wedding Planning Corner’ which has proved very popular.
The children are loving the extra space of our outside area and we have been able to set up new equipment such as the water canal system which the children have enjoyed playing with.
